Proof that I'm not in America (Brandon mass email)

So check out the sweet pictures attached. The item inside that case is an "Automatic" weapon that Mikhail "Kalashnikov" designed in or around 19"47". Apparently it is gold plated because it used to belong to a prior head of state in Iraq. I don't remember his name but it was something like Saddam Huss...Saddam Hewes...well, Saddam who's not in charge of Iraq anymore. Well, apparently there is still some courtroom battle going on to determine the validity of those claims. I don't know much about it, I don't do politics.
The other weapon is called a Dragunov. It is the communist block sniper weapon. Gun enthusiasts go crazy over this thing - it's essentially an "AK-47" (like the description above for those who missed it) that's been extended. I just get my picture taken with them.

The other two are just pictures of little reminders that I'm not quite in America.

Not much to mention out here, yet. Got to see Montgomery Gentry for free a few days ago. Really the only purpose of this email was to brag about getting to hold Saddam's weapon.

Peace,

It was a good plan... (Brandon mass email)

Sup kids, it's me again.

So I had this great plan about how I was going to go cruising this Sunday, when we finally got a day off, and I was going to spend the whole day taking a bunch of pictures and sending them to you because I know everyone wonders how life is over here. Well let me give you some advice you just can't live without:

If you're going out to take pictures, wait to drop and break your camera until after the trip.

No one gave me this advice, but on the plus side it really freed up my Sunday. I've decided the include a few of the pictures I took before the accident and made a little slideshow for your viewing pleasure.

And a couple of you have sent emails asking me to be careful out here, but I want you to keep something in mind. Based on the number of American deaths compared to the number of Americans habitating in a certain region, we are statistically safer to be in Iraq than we are to be in our nation's capital. That being said, I think we can only draw one conclusion: It is time to withdraw from Washington DC.

Drink a beer and pet your dog for me because that's what I miss the most. Oh yeah, that and my wife.

PS Have you talked to Amy recently?

Editor's note: If you want a copy of Brandon's slideshow, send him an email and he'll get that right to ya

6 Reasons My Life Is Over (Brandon mass email)

Alright, think of your worst day ever. Now think of having a headache on that day. Now think of a gorrilla punching you in the face. Now multiply that by 60. Then add 1. You're almost me.

That's right, I'm having a girl. I'm man enough to admit my wife owns me, so I can't even imagine what this little wonder is going to do to me. And the odds of her being a state champion wrestler just went down noticeably.

Actually, we're both very excited. I don't think I'll ever be mature enough to raise the child, so I'm thankful Amy will be there to do all the work. I think she'll have proper motivation however, because she is raising the first Iota Zeta chapter of Alpha Phi potential legacy. Unfortunately I'll never let her go to Colorado School of Mines - there are dudes there. Actually, she's never going to school because guys go to school. I've already decided that she's not allowed to date until she's 35, or until I'm dead, w! hichever one rhymes with NEVER.

I wanted to name her Allison Sierra. Pretty name, right? Amy said we couldn't. Something about the initials. Girls and their logic.

If you haven't yet, you need to call Amy to congratulate her. If this is going to be the first time you've called her since I've deployed, I'm a little disappointed in you. But you can win back my respect. If, however, you continue to deny your responsibility to check on my wife when I can't, well I'd say that makes you an Allison Sierra Schrenk.

As for me out here in the desert, I'm doing just fine. Haven't seen a camel for a couple of weeks, but I imagine most camels just hang out at home spitting on each other when it's 90 degrees on March 1st. I'm still having fun, though. I really appreciate the emails and clever responses I get to these mass emails. Mostly I'! m just impressed that people aren't just trashing them when they see my name.

If you guys need any sand or anything, just let me know. Other than that I don't have a whole lot of souvenirs to bring home. Anybody want a little girl in about 5 months? Just kidding Amy.

Alright, it's time for bed. I hope everybody feels as blessed as I do.

Sexy with Moustache in Kuwait (Brandon mass email)

Hey, hey hey,

Sup everyone, B-Randon (wiky wiky) rappin' atch one more time. This time in color. You should check out the picture I have attached. That sexy dude in the middle, yeah, that's me. And in case you're wondering, the answer is "Yes, that is a moustache." But you'll also notice that everyone in the row with me has inklings of moustachedness (it's a word, look it up) as well. Our wardroom has decided to grow moustaches while were here and being the sheep I am, I'm following. As soon as we take a wardroom photo the lip warmer is gone.

Had something completely unexpected happen. It was my turn to clean the office spaces, and while I was dumping a coffee pot into the bathroom (because it's the only building with drains) I ran into an older gentleman who looked mildly familiar. He said something about how much coffee I was dumping, I said something about governmental waste, he laughed, that was the end...or was it.

About ten minutes later I was emptying trash cans, and this guy was sitting at my desk talking on my phone. He sounded like he was talking politics, was very well spoken and I figured he was a reporter and that's where I recognized him. I overheard him saying something about Colorado troops and a woman called over that they'd have live feed to KOA soon. When he got off the phone I asked, "Is that the Colorado KOA newstation?" He replied that it was came over to shake my hand and said "Bill Owens."

For those of you not from CO (and for those from Colorado who have no political inkling) he is the Governer. You will probably see something in the newspaper or on the news about his trip to Iraq. If he happens to mention the janitor that he met from CO while on his way home, that was me. I never knew my fifteen minutes would be so glamourous.

Everything else is going well. Tomorrow I will get my first day off in almost forty days. Don't call me, I'll be sleeping. Now would be a good time for a mom joke, but nobody's mom is over here...But I'll bet Dobling's mom would fly out if I asked.

Anyway, thanks for the emails, it's good to hear from you all. And for those who send "monkey vs. robot" emails, you're pretty much the coolest person ever. Except for me. And if you think I care about Mississippi's Bday, you're pretty much the stupidist person ever. Except for me.

Greetings from the Desert (Brandon mass email)

Howdy, howdy...did you forget me yet?

So here's the deal...whoever called Kuwait a desert is a liar. When I think of deserts, I don't think cold or wet. Kuwait is both. I can see my breath in the mornings and I'm already scraping ridiculous amounts of mud from my boots. But we're on the ground and rolling, and they tell me we more than make up for this weather in about two months.

It's a nine hour difference from MS (noon there is 9 pm (2100 for the military folks) here) and 10 hours from CO (noon there = 10 pm here). The rest of you are just going to have to do a little extra math.

As you can see I have access to email, though on a limited basis. I have access to phones as well, but it is even more limited and I only have about a four hour window in which I can make phone calls. I'd like to pretend that I call Amy every chance I get, but until she teaches the dog to talk on the phone I don't really have any reason to call...

A lot of you are asking about my job, but I can't say much. Aside from the whole "operational security" thing, I've only been here four days and I don't learn new tricks very quickly. But the gist of it is that the Army, like most people reading this email, has no idea what a Seabee is or what capabilities we have. I work with a bunch of folks who severely outrank me (5 O-5s and 6 O-4s for you military fans) and basically pitch the Seabees to them. It's sort of like saying "Hey, I've heard that you want to build a new house. How would you like me to do it for free?" Obviously, they get really excited when they here this and try to give us everything they want built. My next job is sorting through which projects I've brought onto myself. These conversations tend to sound like "with all due respect, sir, my Seabees build things...they do not clean outhouses." So far the people seem great and I don't foresee myself with a whole lot of free time. Also, I work in the Army office and the Navy tent so it's really easy to say "I'll be in the other building today" and then sneak off and write emails.

Now for the downside. We sleep in squad bays, which are basically the areas you see in boot camp movies, so privacy is a premium, lights turn on at 5 am, and turn off at 10 pm, regardless of how soundly you were sleeping, what you were reading, or how much you yell at the top of your lungs at no one in particular (all three are from personal experience). We have indoor plumbing, but showers and latrines are located about a quarter mile from our berthing. I'm starting to realize that how bad you have to pee is directly proportional to the distance to the latrines, and no matter how tired you are or how far the walk is, you're making it.

The food here is excellent, although alcohol is not allowed. They sell non-alcoholic beer in the stores on base, and in our galley I found some Coors, so at least they have good taste in a crappy invention. They also have a lot of weird food items, but I love trying new stuff. A word to the wise, if it's called "Danish Sour Cream", even though it comes in a yogurt container, it's still sour cream. I have no idea what the Danes were thinking but it only took me one spoonful to toss it.

Also, food is not measured in calories here, and drink ingredients don't say "caffiene, corn syrup"... they say "Na+, 2mg/L, Mg2+, 11mg/L. It's bizarre.

Thats all for now and I'll try to get back to you soon, but for now you have to check out "Waiting", it's frickin' hilarious and it is going to be the next underground superhit (yeah, I said it).

A Salaam alakem, fools (and I don't know what that means or if that's how it's spelled but I heard it on a movie once)

PS. I'll send some pictures next time I get a chance. And have you talked to Amy recently?

Last American Newsletter for Awhile (Brandon mass email)

Well kids, it's that time.

I go to lockdown either Monday night or Tuesday morning, depending on what your outlook on 0130 is, and will be headed to Kuwait sometime soon after that. On the plus side, as long as I'm in Kuwait I should have access to this email account so you can write me if you're bored. But more importantly I can keep the newsletter going!!

First here is my address in Kuwait:

LTJG Schrenk, Brandon
NMCB SEVEN
UNIT 60252
FPO AA 34099-5061

A few days ago we went to the hospital again, and the doctor, feeling sorry for Amy (not for me leaving, just for being stuck with me in general) decided to take a few more snapshots of the kid to see if we could tell what the sex was. The kid was rolling like he was Jake Plummer chasing a fumble (just kidding, and if any of you blame Jake for the loss we're gonna rumble) and when it finally settled down, it crossed it's legs so we couldn't see anything. But as soon as the kid saw the camera it lifted it's hand to give a high five (or maybe throwing a cap?). The attached picture will assure you that this is my kid...and this one didn't even require any magnification!

The final diagnosis...We can't verify if it has boy parts or not. Gotta love science!

But back to me, I'll be back in August in sometime with any luck I'll be back before the kid gets here. And here's the assurance I got from my boss. There are two flights. If Amy is still pregnant when the first flight takes off, I'm on it. If Amy pops before that I'm taking the last flight, which could take off up to two weeks later, back. I've told Amy that when the doctor says "push", she is to immediately knock him out with a Chuck Norris style punch and cross her legs until I get into the room, even if it takes days. I think the plan is flawless.

So please keep in touch and let me know all the mundane details of your life because I'm going to need some distractions while I'm out there. I did my best to talk to most of you recently, but if I didn't I have one word of advice: Never do anything because there is an off chance that I could call.

Take care of Amy while I'm gone,
Hugs and kisses

Kind of a baby pictures (Brandon mass email)

Sup yall.

We went to the doctor today. The doc was trying to take a picture of Amy's womb and right when he took it, some kid jumped into the picture. This is proof that this is my child. I went ahead and zoomed in on the photo so there is further evidence that the kid is mine.

If you don't want to look at pictures, stop reading now and end this email. Otherwise...
